Entertainment – Movie: Lion

The names of the main characters: The main characters names were Saroo Brierley, John Brierley, Sue Brierley, Guddu Khan and Kamla Munshi. Saroo was the main character who was separated from his family at a young age. John and Sue Brierley are Saroo’s adoptive parents who live in Tasmania near Australia. Guddu is Saroo’s brother whose guidance gave Saroo the tools he needed to survive and eventually find his way home. Kamla Munshi is Saroo biological mother who never gave up hope that he would come home.

Summary: When Saroo was 5 years old he got lost in a small town in India, and ended up thousands of kilometers away from his home by falling asleep in a train while searching for his brother, Guddu. Confused, he tries asking for help but no one knows his language and he doesn’t know theirs. Two months pass and Saroo is taken by a man to the police where he tries to tell them where he lives but he mispronounced it so they couldn’t find where he came from or his family so they place him in a orphanage. A few months pass and Saroo is taken to see Ms.Stood who tells him they have put his picture in the newspaper but no one knows him or any of his family and that a family in Australia wants to adopt him. Twenty-five years after he got lost, he begins trying to find his hometown by using Google Earth and calculations on how fast trains went and how long he thinks he was traveling. He also uses his memories of all the exploring he did with his brother. When he finally finds his hometown, he  leaves Australia to go to his old hometown where he finds his mother. Although they are happy to be reunited, she tells him that sadly his brother got hit by a train and died the same day he got lost on the train.

A theme or Universal truth: I believe that the theme of this movie is closely connected to the universal truth that I have selected for this project: wherever you are in the world you are still connected to where you came from. Even though Saroo had a happy life in Australia, he still wanted to go see his mother.

My opinion: I believe this movie was a very good and heartwarming movie. I really enjoyed the ending as it made be so happy. After twenty-five years it was emotional to watch the mother and son see each other for the first time. It was also sad because of how the mother missed seeing her son grow up. It was interesting to me to see how even though Saroo had a good life and loving parents in Tasmania, he still wanted to see his family and his original home.

Audience Demographic: I believe that families would enjoy this movie though I think older people and parents would enjoy it more due to its content. Parents would feel the emotions of what it may be liked to lose a child. I could not imagine how I would survive if I found myself alone without anyone to help me.

Score/Rating System: 10/10 I really enjoyed watching this movie.
